Antivirus

Antivirus software detects and blocks malware (viruses, ransomware, trojans) on computers and phones. Older tools matched files against a list of known threats; next-generation antivirus also watches behavior, so it can stop malware nobody has cataloged yet. Every business device should run one, and the protection built into current Windows and macOS is a reasonable floor.

How Antivirus Works?

Three detection methods in seven and a half minutes. The chapter at 1:39 covers signature detection, 3:20 moves to heuristics, and 4:01 to the sandbox. The part worth staying for starts at 5:07: why those three are not sufficient on their own, followed by a protection strategy at 6:05. For an owner: knowing the three methods tells you which features on the box are worth paying for.

Best Antivirus/EDR vs Unknown Ransomware

Leo runs one custom ransomware simulation against Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, SentinelOne, CrowdStrike and Sophos, each fully updated and online, with a desktop full of Shakespeare as the hostage. He explains at 9:04 why the sample is unknown: familiar ransomware gets caught by signature, so only a new one tests behavioral detection. At 10:35 he notes that the free version of Bitdefender blocked the encryption while a six-figure EDR product may not. If you pay for endpoint protection, ask your vendor for a test like this one.
