Encryption

Encryption scrambles data so that only someone holding the key can read it. It protects data at rest (a laptop's disk, a database), in transit (email, web traffic) and, with newer techniques, in use. Key management is the other half of the job: lose the key and the data is gone, leak it and the encryption was decoration.
